Knee Strength and Slip Severity in Young and Older Adults

چکیده
INTRODUCTION Falls initiated by slips are a major cause of serious injury in the elderly population (Moyer, 2005). Studies have shown a possible correlation between lower extremity muscle strength, which decreases with age, and slip severity (Lockhart, 2005). However, these studies did not focus on the knee, which plays an important role in sliprecovery attempts (Moyer, 2005/2006). Thus, the goal of this study was to investigate the relationship between knee flexion/extension (KF/KE) strength and slip severity in young and older adults.

Knee strength capabilities and slip severity.
Slips and falls are a serious public health concern in older populations. Reduced muscle strength is associated with increased age and fall incidence. Understanding the relationships between specific joint muscle strength characteristics and propensity to slip is important to identify biomechanical factors responsible for slip-initiated falls and to improve slip/fall prevention programs. Knee c...

Falls precipitated by slipping are a serious public health concern especially in the elderly. Muscular responses generated during slipping have not been investigated during gait on contaminated floors. This study compared slip-related muscular responses (reactive and proactive) in young and older adults and examined if characteristics of muscular activation patterns during normal gait impact sl...

The aim of this study is to evaluate the effectiveness of Morita therapy on quality of life and pain intensity in older adult women with chronic knee pain. The research method was pretest-posttest with a control group. The statistical population of the study included the older adults with chronic knee pain in 1399 in the period of June to August in Tabriz. The sample consisted of 30 female pati...
متن کاملAssessment of Slip Severity Among Different Age Groups
A laboratory study utilizing new techniques for assessing slip severity was conducted to investigate the process of inadvertent slips and falls among different age groups. Fortytwo subjects from three age groups (young adults, middle-aged, and the elderly) walked on a rectangular track at a self-determined pace. Without the subjects’ awareness, a slippery floor surface was placed on the track o...
